چکیده
An analysis of one-loop vacuum fluctuations associated with a scalar field confined in the interior of a infinite waveguide of rectangular cross section is presented. We first consider the massless scalar field defined in a four-dimensional Euclidean space. To identify the infinities of the vacuum fluctuations we use a combination of dimensional and zeta function analytic regularization procedures. The infinities which occur in the one-loop vacuum fluctuations fall into two distinct classes: local divergences that are renormalized by the introduction of the usual bulk counterterms, and surface and edge divergences that demand countertems concentrated on the boundaries. We present the detailed form of the surface and edge divergences. Finally we discuss how to generalize our calculations for a confined massive scalar field defined in a higher dimensional Euclidean space.

An analysis of the one-loop vacuum fluctuations associated with a massless scalar field, confined in the interior of a rectangular infinitely long waveguide is presented. To identify the infinities of the vacuum fluctuations we are using different analytic regularization procedures, instead of the usual point-splitting Green's function method. The infinities which occur in ϕ 2 (x) fall into two...

Using the heat kernel method and the analytic continuation of the zeta function, we calculate the canonical and improved vacuum stress tensors, T µν (x) and Θ µν (x), associated with a massless scalar field confined in the interior of an infinitely long rectangular waveguide. The local depence of the renormalized energy for two special configurations when the total energy is positive and negati...

We show that lattice regularization of noncommutative field theories can be used to study non-perturbative vacuum phases. Specifically we provide evidence for the existence of a striped phase in two-dimensional noncommutative scalar field theory.

Inflation with tunneling from a false to a true vacuum becomes viable in the presence of a scalar field that slows down the initial de Sitter phase. As a by-product this field also sets dynamically the value of MPlanck observed today. This can be very large if the tunneling rate (which is exponentially sensitive to the barrier) is small enough. Therefore along with Inflation we also provide a n...

Casimir interactions ( due to the massless scalar field fluctuations ) of two surfaces which are close to each other are studied. After a brief general presentation of the technique, explicit calculations are performed for specific geometries.
